NIACW 259 Tropic Thunder

Comedies are hard to discuss, mostly because if one doesn’t find something funny the first time one sees it, a hearty discussion rarely changes that view. Tropic Thunder tickled the funny bone of Eric and Drew but Brother J remains unimpressed.

Along the way they discuss Richard Cheese and Drew tells a talk of pediatric x-rays.

NIACW 223 Novocaine

Novocaine divided the brothers. Brother J liked it, Eric didn’t like it, and Drew was somewhere in the middle. They discuss whether it was supposed to be a black comedy or a quirky thriller or something else. J accuses Eric of bringing too much baggage to the film, which is fair.

Overall the brothers Kubo the movie then move to fun housekeeping.

Housekeeping starts at 35:00
Drew tells an aquatic tale of terror at about 40:00
J tells a story of musical majesty at about 52:00

NIACW 186 Grosse Pointe Blank

Grosse Pointe Blank is full of great actors quipping fun lines amidst solid action sequences set to late 80’s music. What’s not to love?

Correction: Eric mentions that the director, George Armitage, also directed 1971’s “Private Duty Nurses,” which Eric described as a “Nudie Cutie” movie. Upon further review it is probably better described as a “Sexploitation” movie.

In housekeeping we discuss Rogue One, The Accountant, House of 1000 Corpses, Dawn of the Dead, and Exorcist III. We also recommend the podcasts: “Monster Party” and “In the Dark.”

NIACW 184 Soapdish

Soapdish has an all-star cast but, while Eric and J liked revisiting it, Drew thought it was weak sauce.

Later we pour one out for Miguel Ferrer (RIP), brother J suggests how best to watch Twin Peaks, and Eric discusses some movies he watched this week: The Man Who Wasn’t There, Diabolique 1955 and Diabolique 1996, and The Russian Woodpecker.

NIACW 183 The Big Lebowski

Another Coen Brothers movie that Brothers E and J love but Drew dislikes intensely, the Big Lebowski is chock full of quotables.

This episode has a fair amount of meandering so be prepared. We discuss, among other things, cutting the cable cord and Carrie Fisher’s virginity.

Housekeeping starts at 1:15:00

The Big Lebowski “Fuck” count:
260 “fuck”s, 117 minutes of movie. 2.22 fucks per minute

Compare to Wolf of Wall Street:
569 fucks in 180 minutes for a 3.16 fucks per minute which is the top of mainstream films.

Goodwill Hunting and Scarface have 1.22 and 1.21 fucks per minute

The Grey has 1.3 fucks per minute (and is a Christian film, right?)

NIACW 173 Roxanne

Eric thinks Steve Martin’s Roxanne is great like comfort food; Brother J thinks it’s 2/3 of a good film. After 30 minutes of film talk Eric and J take a train to Audible book talk that goes wildly off the rails at the end. Good times!

NIACW 171 Young Frankenstein

Young Frankenstein is all of the atmosphere of Universal horror of the 30s and all of the schticky fun of Mel Brooks.

Eric and Jason talk a lot about Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman, and Herve Villechaize.

Eric confuses hilarious Canadian Graham Clark with Python’s Graham Chapman.

They also talk about Black Christmas (1974) , Jaws, Phantasm , Arachnophobia , and Damnation Alley .

Jason talks about the Oregon coast and Christopher Lee.

Then at 36:30, we time travel to September of 2015 and some housekeeping Drew had about Mr. Robot and Misophonia.

NIACW 150 Miller's Crossing

Miller’s Crossing was a hit for 2/3rds of Los Bros Anderson. There’s surprising little to talk about because you have to experience it to appreciate it. Luckily fate handed the brothers plenty of celebrity and near celebrity death to discuss.

NIACW 148 A Fish Called Wanda

A Fish Called Wanda is a fun movie that Drew doesn’t like which makes it a perfect choice for a Drew-less episode.

There is a lot of goofiness in this ep. Later Brother J and Eric talk about the West Wing Weekly, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Steve Miller, Never Not Funny episode 1809, the Black Keys, and Van Morrison.

NIACW 136 Roadhouse

Road House is a fun movie, unabashed about what it is. First we revisit the band Trio and briefly discuss VW and the EPA.

Road House talk starts about minute 7.

During Road House talk the tangents go from the Expendables, Road House 2: Last Call, being SWATed, Compliance, Eddie Lawrence and The Old Philosopher (whom Eric calls the “Old Prospector”), the 12 Monkeys television show, the OODA loop, and Dr Dean Edell.

Along with the usual feature The Six Degress of 2001 there is a new feature: Just Me or Heredity? Today’s ailment is a statin reaction… or is it?

NIACW 133 Idiocracy

Idiocracy is probably a better idea than it is a movie. Listen to all 3 Anderbros discuss this film and tangent off into all sorts of other things.

Idiocracy talk runs from 15:00 to about 40:00.

Afterward they discuss developing signature segments and then we hear from Mother Anderson. After that is some housekeeping which would usually have been edited out but it might be interesting to some to pull back the curtain somewhat. Oh and it devolves into tales of dentistry so fair warning there.
